Don’t Let Mother Nature Write Your Paycheck: Cucumber Crop Insurance Options

Robert Cerda, President
Crop Insurance Systems Inc.

Cucumbers are one of the most weather-sensitive crops you grow — a late frost or a week of cold, wet weather at the wrong moment can wipe out a season’s income before you ever send a load to the processor. Crop insurance exists precisely to stand between you and that kind of financial catastrophe. By establishing a guaranteed level of production based on your own historical yields, crop insurance ensures that when the weather turns against you, your operation survives with minimal financial pain. Whether it’s hail damage, excessive rain, an irrigation failure, or acres that had to be by-passed entirely, a well-structured policy keeps your cash flow alive and your business intact when things go sideways.

This presentation draws on 15 years of actual cucumber crop insurance data covering $370M in insured cucumber crops across 9 states.  The results tell a compelling story. In states like Texas, growers have received more than $3.50 for every dollar they paid in premium. In Alabama and Florida, that figure climbs to nearly $5 back for every $1 in. You’ll see exactly how coverage levels work, how grades factor into your guarantee, and how a loss payment is calculated when yields fall short.

Crop Insurance Systems, Inc. is actively working to bring this proven program to cucumber growers in states and counties not currently being served — and this session is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor. You’ll learn what data is needed to establish coverage in your county, what the coverage options look like, and how the program would be tailored to your operation. If you grow pickling cucumbers under contract and want to protect your investment from the unpredictable forces of weather and nature, this is a session you cannot afford to miss.
